Summer at the Lyon Household is in full swing. Which means, my husband, who is a landscape designer and owns Lyon Landscaping, is quite busy. Currently at our own home. ;-) We have our daughter's first birthday party coming up in a few weeks so he is working on the backyard making sure it is worthy to have guests over. The other day we went shopping for an umbrella for the backyard. With plans of spending a lot of time in the backyard this upcoming summer with my daughter, I wanted to make sure we had a plenty of shade for us to cool off under.
While at Home Depot shopping for an umbrella, Christian (my husband), mentioned he wasn't going to buy the traditional base. Instead he had an idea he had seen in one of his landscaping magazines. It is pretty awesome!!!! The usual bases are big and bulky and let's be honest....not very aesthetically appealing. But check out the one my husband made!
Let me explain the "How To" part of it. First, he took a fairly large sized flower pot and placed some PVC pipe in it.
One pipe was for the pole of the umbrella, the other two were drains for the plants that were placed on top. Next, using quick dry cement he filled the flower pot about 3/4 of the way full.
He allowed the cement to set and then sawed down the two side pipes. He topped the cement off with potting soil and added some pretty plants. And voilĂ ! We have a beautiful and unique base for our umbrella and it was super easy to make. Let the summer time activities begin.
Note: You need to make sure you have holes in the pot where the drain pipes are put for the water to flow out. The pot we happened to use, already had the two holes on the side were the smaller PVC pipe was put.
What are your thoughts on the base? Do you use a traditional base or do you have your own type?

Welcome!
Welcome to The Lyon Lair! I've wanted to start this blog for quite sometime but was constantly sidetracked. However, now that it is summer I'm geared up and ready to go. Except for when the baby starts to cry.....like now. So I need to make this quick.
Stay tuned for posts on product reviews for the family, stories on family life and projects that I have going on. Hopefully you'll find something useful or amusing during your time on here. And please feel free to leave me a comment. I love to hear what my readers think.
